Hey all:

Just took a looksie at the auction counts here and ebaY is up again above 14M. Is it possible the 'sale' yesterday for Canada has been 'added' to the numbers in part?

The last I looked, ebaY was hovering between 12M and 13M.

What are your thoughts?

Ebay only gave Store sellers a One Month Notice on 21 Jul 2006 that ebay will majorly raise Store Insertion and Final Value fees on 22 Aug 2006. A lot of store sellers who were caught/trapped holding a lot of inventory.

According to PSU on eBays Chart
*Ebay started to include store listings as of 02/10/06 which increased the approximately 14,000,00 listings to 55,000,00
*Ebay removed the store listings again as of 04/07/06

So it appears that Stores have about 40 Million items.

A lot of Store sellers are not happy with eBay (want to leave) but are sort of trapped with inventory and because of the holiday season are going to sell some items in Core Auctions (Fixed or auction). So listings are increasing because of this.

It will probably not be until Q1 2007 or Q2 2007 until you see the real impact of the exodus of ebay’s Store sellers leaving ebay. Most Store sellers were Power Sellers with 100's and 1000's of sales with very high Feedback Ratings. Ebay is going to loose a TON of highly experienced sellers. Also these Power Sellers are also major buyers too (especially the collection people).

In Q1 2007 ebay is going to add Half.com items to ebay. So ebays listings might go up.

Ebay also seem to be believes that if a seller leaves ebay two will take their place. Ebay (a defacto monopoly) also just recently, at least in my community, and I have heard of others saying the same in their community, were giving free presentations to the public with USPS (a government subsidized monopoly) on how to sell on ebay and ship via USPS. So it is sort of like they are feeding newbie sellers into the eBay machine to
make up for exodus of experienced sellers leaving. A lot of these newbie sellers are going to make a lot of newbie mistakes (poor Customer Service, Ship too late, price incorrectly, etc.) and thus offend buyers. Some are going to have to leave because their Feedback rating is too low. I think most will, probably after 20-100 sales (or 2-4 months) realize how difficult and time consuming it is to sell on ebay and make a profit above minimal wage (after paying Ebay Inititial and FVF and Ebay-Paypal fees).

So in conclusion:

It seems like ebay is sacrificing Long Term for the sake of Short Term. Also, ebay can probably keep it listing numbers up with bringing in Half.com people and Newbie sellers.

Just my opinion…
