WASHINGTON: Suspects in an alleged plot to blow up flights from Britain to the US helped finance their operation by buying and selling items on internet auction site eBay.
An intelligence report cited by the US' ABC News said that a suspect, Assad Sarwar, 26, "used eBay extensively" to raise funds for the plot.
"It is believed they would sell and purchase items to make a profit to fund (the) plot," it said.
The report said Sarwar also surfed the internet to price and purchase supplies, including 20l of hydrogen peroxide, bought online from a hydroponic gardening centre.
Hydrogen peroxide is a critical ingredient in several types of homemade explosives.
British authorities arrested two-dozen people in an August raid to foil the alleged plot to bomb airliners using liquid explosives.
ABC News reported that according to the intelligence report, the suspects hollowed out AA batteries and experimented with filling them with a small amount of homemade explosives and other components.
Several AA batteries were seized at a house in High Wycombe, Britain, that investigators describe as "the bomb factory", ABC News said.

A few weeks ago there was a tv series(I think it was a 3 parter US made) about a terrorist plot to set off a chemical bomb at a large event, during one of the episodes eBay was mentioned, the guy said that a particular listing was the way to contact him..etc...
Anyhow a little off topic is the fact that many companys that sell fake goods supply sellers who use ebay and generate a fortune for them selves and ebay, these producers boast " Quality: We only produce high quality shoes, which sell best in Europe.
All our shoes are in top quality, if not an expert, no one can tell them from the original ones, and with original box, tag, etc" So i suppose unknowing ebay have one sort of crime happening on its web site and I suspect turns a blind eye to the fake side of things....I mean a couple of nights back on the ps board there was a sort of protest with multiple post by different sellers asking what the posting rules were because so many threads keep being removed, ok so soon enough a few threads vanish, it is amazing how close some things are watched and dealt with but other serious stuff like the fake and rip off listings flourish.......
I have seen in the past threads that talked about not getting items from China (bulk shipments of Nike fakes) and the company names mentioned, I mean these were companys that sell fakes so sellers discussing their source that they sell on ebay, well what can be said.... |
