SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 18 (Reuters) - EBay Inc. (EBAY.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Wednesday that the online auction company has no plans to exit the China market in the face of mounting competition, rebuffing speculation by some analysts of a possible pullback.
"We are committed to China for the long term," President and Chief Executive Meg Whitman told investors on a conference call following eBay's quarterly report.

Geez, Meg, you're wearing me out. Tough to make a decision? |

| As long as they 'stay' and fight the good fight, the fees collected 'here' support their cause. I have no issue with the business model expanding globally, I do however see a huge issue with expecting existing customers to fund it without any ROI... :? |

Ebay is in a rut/quagmire in China. The Chinese are ultra competitive and they are receiving quite a bit of competition from Jack Ma of TaoBao (and Alibaba and Yahoo China). Ebay has bowed out of Japan to Yahoo Japan because they thought it was a hopeless cause. China has surpassed Japan in Internet usage and will eventually pass the USA. Ebay feels like they just cannot give up this very large market. They are also I think scared that if they could loose out totally to TaoBao that TaoBao will eventually come to the USA (revitalize Yahoo Auctions)…
TaoBao had built in Immediate Messaging into it’s Auction Site, which build up a lot of trust and repeat buyer relationships between Sellers and Buyers. Probably the main reason behind the purchase of Skype is to compete with this (even this article states that Ebay China will have Skype first before other countries).
So ebay is stuck in China. They had the lead buy buying out the main leader. They lost that lead, now they are trying to catch up…
Time wil Tell...

Ebay will never succeed in China... Let alone Asia until they drastically change their operating style…for some totally strange reason they seem to believe that they can duplicate the US system and it will work in Asia…….NEVER
The Asian mentality is totally different ……
1) why would someone in China bid on any item…….they can get almost everything they need from markets at fix price (ebay express would make much more sence)…so it’s not rocket science to see why Aibaba is so successful
2) Ebay customer service will bomb as Asian’s won’t put up with Lawyer type answers or replies…plus to translate ebays standard crap replies into Chinese etc would make Ebay loose face big style in Asia…and that is the key to ANY business in Asia...a very stupid error on their part
All customer ebay replies etc to Asian ebayers come from the US...and they are the same dumb script....a pooly educated Chinese ebayer who does not understand English too well is really going to understand the canned Vero, spamming, fee circumvention etc email
MegW has absolutly NO idea and is coasting...until she moves on
(On a non relavent issue Wal Mart announced 3 days ago a massive investment into China…after long market research...something ebay did not do)
Ebay have to keep the PR machine running to give confidence to the rest of Ebay World…they can’t just say we failed in China…the largest growing economy in the World, this could give people the chance to think that ebay was failing Worldwide
I can see a deal with Alibaba etc very soon as ebay has the cash on hand
But as the Wise Chinese say…..”keep put hand in fire..hand get burnt”
:butt: |

| Just another poorly thought, hastily done venture that is probably doomed to failure! All I see that has come in from China is cheap knock offs, hackers and thieves. Not that all Chinese are crooked or disreputable but feebay sure seems to attract the ones who are. Maybe because feepay seems to have become a haven for that sort of behavior! LOL, Dixie |

You could say that again. Well, sellers button up your wallets cause it looks like Meg is gonna try to dig around in them again for her favorite dry well...China! I still hope they lose their shirts there but good! |

| Is ebay still free in china? If so, why would the chinese want them to fail or leave? They are running their auctions on the money from ebay sellers in the rest of the world :-( |
