Im not a computer dummy. But I am in this case. LOL. Any help and opinions welcome. I recently made a sale on Ecrater. After loggin in I see this free Google payment deal. Im confused by the whole thing. Do you get charged per click? I read something like that when clicking on the info. Is that a separate deal and they are just advertising? Is it free just till December and then a small fee after like Pay Pal? Is it worth the effort to sign up? Does it cost anything? Sorry for all the questions, but any help or thoughts wanted. I did nothing after getting completely confused.

Yes it's sort of like PP with a smaller fee after 1/1/07.

It's not quite as easy as PP yet, but over the weekend they added an invoice feature that will help.

Basically you need to set up a checkout account at Google. It will ask for your SS# or your EIN #. Then you have to provide a checking or savings account # and have it verified with a small deposit they put in. The account # is because GC does NOT keep an account like PP does. It deposits to your own account when they get the credit card verification from the buyer.

At eCrater and Blujay, you can set up the GC payment thru them. If you have a web site with a shopping cart, you MAY be able to add the GC mod for the cart. Not all carts have it available yet.

The new invoicing feature will make it possible to use GC at ANY site by sending an invoice similar to the PP "request for payment" email.

To get started, just open a browser window and go to Google. Then click the "more" and find "Checkout" in the list. The pages there will walk you thru setting up an account.

Ok, I understand. But here is my biggest question.
Does the cutomer have to be signed up to use Google checkout? Or just me? And if the customer does. How many are willing to go through and redo all their bank account info to redo this paying process? Some find this a pain. Is it worth it?

I think it's worth it. The customer will likely only enter their address and their cc number as they have to do with virtually any site the first time.

Most people buying on the internet are interested in using their cc. Not particularly paypal. Ebayers have been sold the pp bill of goods but other internet buyers have never heard of pp. Everyone has heard of Google.

Just my .02.

Ok, thanks jo. Good advice. I take it you signed up. I guess this is a good time for me. Ok, Ill give it a whirl. I was reading about price per click and that scared me. I take it that was just an added advertising thing you could sign up for. Yicks. I didn't want to pay price per click for people to look at my stuff. LOL

ladyJ,

As far as I understand it, Jo is right. The customer just enters their CC info and I would assume their shipping address info the FIRST time they use it.

It's sort of like the old Yahoo Wallet in that Google Checkout then stores the info and the next time the customer uses it on any GC site, it's a quick checkout.

No pay per clicks for Google Checkout. The ppc program is Google Adwords. You don't have to use the adwords to be able to use the checkout.

The price per click thing comes in in the fact that IF you are a Google adwords customer, you would get a discount on the fee per payment accepted after 1/1/07.

But you don't HAVE to be an adwords customer to be a Google Checkout user. Even without the adwords discount, GC is a bit cheaper/ payment than PP. And the payments go directly to YOU, not into the PP account that you can't always get at.

Yes adwords, thats what they called it. I assumed you had to sign up for both. Good. Now I see. Thank you. Thats just something you get added as a bonus, IF you want it and there is a discount.
Now that sounds expensive. Does anyone use that? I could understand paying for adwords if you had your own website, but is it necessary if you are on say Ecrater, or yahoo?

Adwords is not expensive in that you can have any monthly budget you want. You could spend $2.00 a month for example. Also highly targeted searches are not expensive per click.

Adwords for eBay? Bad idea....I'm not as angry at eBay as alot folks on this board but moves like this annoy me greatly. You pay for the click , and eBay has a banner that invites you to visit competitions auctions

eCrater addwords can be an awesome idea

Problem , Adwords you pay to get someone to visit ,but only small minority of people will EVER buy anything from a visit. The better your product ,service and pitch the higher the probability. So adwords can be expensive per item.

The typical site takes couple hundred visitors to get a sale , if you can get it down to 200 or 100 or 75 clicks per sale , then you are doing a good job.

So if you are selling homemade mittens or $1 books....its expensive.....while selling custom leather seats for Range Rovers or timeshares in Namibia....its a no brainer investment.

My site is not ready for prime time so I eventually pulled my adword campaign for the season.

Instead of adwords , consider Myspace ,Blogger ,Free Online Classfieds to get traffic for free. Once you have a head of steam and loads of traffic in the bag already ad words can be nice !
