TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --
A Florida man has been charged with harvesting and selling rare orchids on eBay.
Authorities said the orchids include an endangered species found almost entirely in the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve. That's a swampy area made famous in the book "The Orchid Thief" and the movie "Adaptation."
Officials said Tuesday that a man searching the Web auction site for orchids realized that two of the species Gary Bienemann of Clearwater was selling are virtually nonexistent outside two state parks. He called state officers, who say they discovered Bienemann had dozens of legally protected orchids for sale.
Investigators said the plants were being sold for about $16 to $40 each. |

Considering the price he was selling the plants for - I suspect he may not have known what he even had?

| GARY , knew all to well what he was pilfering , he has all the books to identify them, also bought on ebay. and i'm sure i am not the only one who could look at the offerings and tell they were ripped outta trees. as an orchid enthusiast i can appreciate the addiction caused by these gems of nature, but gary's sole purpose was the all mighty dollar. for those of us who play by the rules get the permits, grow our plants from seed and incure the expense of doing so , i thank whoever it was that stopped him.now if i could just catch the person who stole from my personal collection ,i be having a great day, the LIONTAMER |
