Among Checkout users, 19% rated the service as either very good or good, with the rest calling it average, poor or fair, a result characterized by J.P. Morgan as "a very low level of satisfaction with the product." By contrast, PayPal, which is owned by eBay Inc., fared better, with 44% of its users saying it's very good or good.

Google introduced Checkout in June of last year, after more than a year of speculation about its plans to enter the lucrative online payments market for business-to-consumer transactions, PayPal's stomping ground. It was one of the highest-profile product introductions for Google in 2006 and is seen as a clear example of the company's efforts to find new sources of revenue beyond its core business of search engine advertising.

I don't care what the margin of error is with the survey they conducted. They surveyed 1100 people who used both Paypal and Google, and there is no way to correctly get the full scale opinion of GC this way. Now, the second reason I say this survey has little to no bearing... the survey was conducted by longimte Paypal investment partner, JP Morgan. They would stand to lose a lot if Paypal lost market share, so why not conduct a biased survey?

Read this article from JP Morgan's own newsroom to see Paypal called "JPMorgan Chase's client PayPal." Apparently, JP Morgan provides the payment gateway for Paypal's global payments.

Sounds like some more corporate B.S. to me, straight from the mouth of eBay.

Good article.

Personally I've had no problems with GC other than their buttons don't work like the PP buttons so I can't really use them on my web site like I do with the PP buttons.

Google DOES need to fix a few things to make their program a bit more user friendly. While everything does work, some things just aren't as "intuitive" as they could be.

Also every once in a while the site will slow way down. I've correlated it to days when a new promotion starts or on "Black Monday". Then the time it takes for an order to be "approved" goes from just a minute or 2 to HOURS. I had 1 order take about 8 hours and another take about 18 hours.

But I figure those were days the site was just totally overwhelmed with orders. A few more servers and some more bandwidth probably solved that problem since I haven't seen anything like that again.

Hey, GC only launched in July and most users didn't join until around Oct/Nov. Give the site a break. Anyone remember what PP was like the first year ?? I don't, but I'm sure they didn't have all the bugs worked out then either. Heck, they still don't, 8 (?) years later.

Just the fact that Paypal already exists makes the standards at this stage of development really different than those Paypal encountered early on. At that point there was no industry giant that was a household name!

My money is on Google, they'll work it out over time!

I fail to see how the author of the article comes to the conclusion that ebay has nothing to worry about. Can they really be happy with a mere 44 percent of users being happy with it? Seems to me like a very dismal statistic from the Paypal point of view. Leaves 56 percent that are likely very open for an alternative, be it Google or an as yet unknown

Paypal ONLY 44%!!!!!!!!...In school that would equate to a C- or a D test result? (Relevant as it’s being run by Children)

That’s pathetic by any standards; it would be interesting to see how many of the 44% were buyers…as I can almost guarantee very few sellers will be in the 44% of being happy.. Fraudulent chargeback’s/frozen accounts being the biggest complaints
