Yahoo! and Paypal teaming up against Google Checkout?
http://ebaystrategies.blogs.com/ebay_strategies/2007/02/yahoo_and_paypa.html
Now that Yahoo! launched their quality-score based system (codenamed Panama) where click-through matters, the buzz is that a Google Checkout-esque system is in the works where if the advertiser takes PayPal as a payment mechanism, a paypal logo will be displayed.
I checked a couple of sources and I think this is going to happen pretty soon.

Google needs to fine tune, become broader and get their international ball rolling...
Once they do that, I will kiss Paypal goodbye... I bet a lot of others would too... |

xbaystores,
That page has been around for at least 2-3 months. If you will notice it's for BUYERS, not sellers.
Basically what that page means is that if a buyer in any of those countries wants to pay with a credit card that will do a money conversion for them, they can. GC will not do the money conversion.
It's like when you go on vacation out of the country and use your credit card. You have to specify what type/countries money you are authorizing.
It's still a little clunky and many buyers won't know how to use it like that.
I had a nice sale last Friday that I didn't know was going to be from Canada when we first emailed. I tried to get her to use the GC option, but she went thru the Mal's cart but the PP option. Cost me almost $4 in fees I would have liked to have saved if we had had a better idea of how to use GC.

I had been hoping that Google check out would be the answer to Paypal, however after trying to send an invoice to an ebay bidder, I have little to no faith in Google as an alternative.
Below is the question I sent to google cs and their canned response..
At first glance one would have thought I had written pheebay
Hello
I have now sent 4 invoices thru checkout to a man for an ebay
purchase, he has now signed up for check out but the link at the bottom of
the invoice won't let him pay..
Any ideas?
This hassle with checkout is not looking on my business..

Hello Bxxx,
Thank you for your email. I understand you are having an issue with
invoicing.
You can use the Merchant Center to email invoices to buyers and have them
pay through Google Checkout.
The invoices you email to your buyers will contain a personalized message
from you regarding the requested payment. The invoices will also contain a
'Pay now through Google Checkout' button. When buyers click this button in
the email, they'll be brought to checkout.google.com where they can
complete the payment process using Google Checkout.
>From your email I understand your buyer is not able to click on the link
and go through to the Google hosted page for a secure payment.
In this case, please ask your buyer to clear their browsers cache and
cookies.
Please feel free to write back if the problem still persists.
Sincerely,
Hrishikesh

BHWINC,
I think I know what your invoice problem MIGHT be. If your customer has his email set to "plain text" he won't get the clickable links. This has been posted a couple of times on the Google Checkout groups, with no solution from Google.
I don't know if this wil work or not, but ask your buyer about the text vs HTML email. Even if he just gets it as plain text, he MIGHT be able to do a copy/past of the link to his browser.
Unfortunately it seems that too many of the people at Google are just TOO techie and have no idea that a lot of people don't know how or why they need to do some things certain ways. They also don't seem to know how most of us run a "store". They have a good idea, they just need some "real world" help.

Thanks Carol,
I just email the fella to pass this bit of info on to him so he can give it a try...
I also just responed to the canned response I recieved from the checkout support staff. I gave them a rather large chunk of my mind (my mind is not a nice place today)..
I wonder what preaddressed responses they will have for being compared to ebay C.S. and being told that I was planning on changing my website payment methods from paypal to google c.o. but after their poor at best help it just may say a paypal site as at least they have phone #.
Thanks again,
Brad |

I know what you mean. I'm about in the same place today. I've had to re-boot my computer too many times today.
It's the old "some days you're the mouse and some days you're the cheese" Today I feel like the cheese and I have a herd of mice all over me.
I hope my tip works for you and your customer.
