Today when checking my eBay listings I happened to notice something on the homepage that I had not seen before. I’m sure most eBay buyers have seen the eBay DealFinder before but I only sell on eBay, not buy, so it was new to me.

What struck me right away was how eBay stated that they compared prices between eBay and other marketplaces NOT CONSIDERING shipping charges. This seemed so ironic to me given how eBay has been hitting their sellers over the head with information about how sensitive online shoppers are about shipping costs. Heck, eBay sellers are even graded on their shipping costs via Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs). Given that eBay chose to compare prices excluding shipping costs tells me that eBay is admitting that shipping costs on eBay are higher than other marketplaces especially because marketplaces like Amazon are known for its free shipping model.

Next I clicked on the link that said “see more deals”:

more.. link to news article

yes they have their way of making something look good don't they take that item and subtract the % you would save on purchase it on ebay then add the shipping costs back in to the price it is ever so close as to the price that you would pay on amazon with free shipping and it is just a joke how ebay uses these type of shell games to promote themselfs. your not saving much in the end it might be 0.01-0.25 at most lol I did the math and that was the result sad but true

Won't this program also lower the views on most sellers' products? Do you have to "pay" to be in this program?

I'm not sure if this is a UK thing only, or if it's just something they are testing, because I can't find "deal Finder" anywhere. I even went to the UK site and didn't find it.

All I ever see is the "Daily Deals" - which are always free shipping - and I've even bought a few. Sometimes they are good deals - mostly those from buy.com (which usually offers the same deals on their website - plus many more than on ebay).

Some of the best deals I've gotten were on video games (a few bucks less than Amazon) - and I got a whole season of Entourage for $10 (free shipping - no one on the internet could touch that). I also got a year of xbox live for $30 ($20 off - best I've seen on Amazon was $35).

They also have these "mystery deals" which are sometimes quite good too. Yesterday's deal was for a new Panasonic DMP-BD65 Blu-Ray player for $109 shipped free. Great price for a fully networked bluray player with streaming video (netflix, amazon, etc). Amazon's best price on this was $123 (shipped free), and the average price is more like $150.

As a buyer, I like the daily deals - and as a seller, I like anything that consistently brings buyers to the site. That's what I pay for. It really is a lot like a mall in the sense that every "sale" and store that brings traffic ultimately benefits every store. In one sense they are competition, but if you aren't competing with price/quality/selection then it really won't matter where you sell.

I tried to search too, couldn't even find anything on eBay's Announcement page.

Stock-thanks for the info on the Xbox live. That is a good price-any particular seller you'd recommend? A gift for my husband Very Happy

The xbox gold cards go on sale as promos a few times a year. As we get closer to the holidays, there will be deals.

Right now the best deal I know of is Amazon at $34.54 (free shipping)
