merlin_man - thanks for that. I don't want to contact the site. I want users' input on if they can find google products. I can not speak for others, but when I'm in the market to purchase, I start with Google Products.

BUT IF YOU FIND ITEMS ARE NOT APPEARING
email them else nothing will change thats the whole point of all of this thread / site to make a positive change

I agree with some of the previous posts. For most of us, this is not a boycott, it's a revolt. Those of us who've just walked are best served by finding new homes on other sites, and forgetting ebay. Those of you who can't walk (and I have heard very few who wouldn't if they could!) have a great idea of radically decreasing your number of listings. That would be the work slow down. Meanwhile, tell everyone you know about what ebay has done. If we can get the buyers to boycott, and the sell through rate drops and drops, that will ultimately get their attention. eBay doesn't care what we do. I've given up (on a personal level) caring about them.

merlin_man - I was able to find about 400k items listed into GoogleBase from ebid. That's a nice # - but these are from 'all ebid sites'.

So, it appears that more than half of the listings either aren't input correctly or are auction with no buy-now.

Thanks for your help - I do not need any assistance with the 'hows' of Google Products - my items usually appear within 24 hours from both eCrater and also from HiBidder. The same for BiddersNSellers + BluJay.

Sellers - if exposure in Google Products is part of your plan, be certain to search for your items after upload - they usually appear within 24-36 hours on most sites.

For those continuing to boycott - great for you!

For those who can not - great for you!

The best outcome from the various ebaY fee and policy changes is awareness. Awareness for sellers that there are other choices. Awareness for buyers of the same.

Best of sales to all! Laughing Laughing

I am having a brain lurch at the moment as to who and where this link was posted earlier on PSU, but I think it is worth posting again. It will make you see red about who has personally reaped the benefit of your labors. Click on the link at the bottom of the page, "All Major Holders", to see who owns ebay.

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/it?s=ebay

I do want to point out, however, that Pierre Omidyar, the founder of ebay and who is still the majority stockholder in ebay, has transferred a considerable amount of stock at no dollar income to him, to help build a new project in India in partnership with Soros Economic Development fund and Google.org. He also maintains the Omidyar Network (see link below), which supports other similar ventures. Good on him for using at least part of the money he has made to support conscientious philanthropy. Interesting, also, that he teamed up with Google to do this.

Read the Feb 19, 2008 press release below. This can be found at:

http://www.omidyar.net/index.php

Investment to Target “Missing Middle” Between Microfinance and Commercial Capital Markets

NEW YORK, February 19, 2008 – The Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF), Omidyar Network, and Google.org announced today a new $17 million Small to Medium Enterprise Investment Company for India to create job opportunities and spur greater economic participation for a larger segment of the population. This joint Investment Company will provide capital to small and medium businesses in underserved markets.

“With this investment, we will meet the huge demand to serve smaller businesses in India that have little access to finance,” said Neal DeLaurentis, Vice President of Soros Economic Development Fund. “Long ignored by commercial capital markets, small and medium businesses are an attractive investment opportunity as well as an engine for economic growth for India.”

Many small to medium Indian businesses lack formal funding options because of a market gap between the microloans offered by microfinance institutions and the larger investments of commercial banks and private equity funders. Most of the existing Small to Medium Enterprise funds make investments in the $3-$5 million range, leaving out a significant portion of this market. The Investment Company will target this “missing middle” with equity investments between $500,000 and $3.5 million.

“We have seen what microloans can do at the individual level and are excited about bringing that same opportunity to small and medium businesses,” said Jim Bunch, Director of Investments at Omidyar Network. “A new generation of entrepreneurs and their families will benefit economically and socially, and as their enterprises grow, these benefits can be shared with employees and their families, as well as the community at large.”

“While SMEs in rich countries represent half of GDP, they account for a much lower portion in developing economies like India, partly because SMEs don’t have access to the same type of financing,” said Sonal Shah of Google.org. “Our goal is to increase the flow of capital to SMEs in India. This is an important step in helping to attract commercial capital and reduce dependency on philanthropy or soft capital to fund this industry.”

SEDF, Omidyar Network and Google.org plan to locate the Investment Advisor at the Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad to leverage the school’s SME expertise. Dr. Reuben Abraham, currently the ISB’s Director of the Base of Pyramid Lab and a board member of SEDF, will be named Senior Advisor.

The Investment Company will hire an experienced Investment Advisor and two experienced senior investment analysts based in India to recommend and build the pipeline of portfolio investments.

I'm not so much boycotting as I am legitimately scared off. I'll likely continue to make a few listings here and there, but the new policies have significantly narrowed the type of listings I can create that are "low risk". There's always going to be an "across the board" risk now with the feedback changes, but even then, different products attract different kinds of people.

So yes, I'd support an extended boycott.

oh forgot to add this from a american seller 10 days he been at ebid did all he was advised and result

Hooray!!!

Lots of us newbies around here & hopefully, all will be posting this same message soon...I got my first bid!

There is an added gloat factor for me, as this item was once listed on E..y & didn't sell on that giant with its huge audience.

For anyone debating whether to try eBid (especially small/occasional sellers), give it a whirl...not much to lose. Through eBid, my item was uploaded to Google & happened to show up on the first page search results there. Item was listed on eBid about 10 days ago. Decent turn-around time, minimal listing fees & auctions can be set to run until they get a bid. After years of doing auctions one way, it's pretty easy to learn the ropes at eBid - used FAQ, forum search & asked questions of the oh-so-kind folks here. Seems a lot of the long-time eBidders are still very enthusiastic & are genuinely glad to have us newbies around. Be careful, though, they're enthusiasm is infectious!

PostPosted: Sun Feb 24, 2008 3:44 pm Post subject:  Re: Should we Extend the Ebay Boycott #223 Back to top

This is a duplicate of a post I just made over on a thread named "This is a big dose or reality...", which I suggest you go to and read the full detailed messages from eBichin about why ebay has made this deliberate shift in their business model.

---

I have to say that I agree with most of what eBichin has said. Ebay has only made these desperation moves in order to become "ebazon," which will be just like the online discount fixed price venue that Amazon is. This all came about because the stock has been on a steady decline for several years and the topper was that Amazon did 20% more business over Christmas than ebay did.

So anyone who thinks that it is not a deliberate shift in the entire business model is kidding themselves. This is ebay in crisis management mode, trying not to completely go completely belly up. If you don't believe me, just look not only at the US listing numbers and the sell through percentages, but look at ebay's global listings and sell through (even more dramatically down than the US numbers).

You as a small or large auction style seller are in ebay's crosshairs. Every aspect of their new policies is designed to shed you like fleas off a dipped dog's back. As soon as a significant enough number of you (us/we) are gone or inactive, ebay can happily lay off abougt 2/3rds of their 15,000 employees.

The whole point of the boycott from the beginning was and should continue to be this: Diversify now before the rude awakening comes that you can no longer count on ebay for a steady source of income, whether it is part time or full time.

There are numerous alternatives to online selling other than ebay. So when you feel you need to continue to sell on ebay (which nobody should get away with blaming you for doing), do so, but put all of your extra energy and time and money into developing your own website and/or other selling venues. There are plenty of good ones out there that are poised and ready to pick up where ebay left off in about 2004, when it was a fun, friendly, and cheap place to buy and sell in just about any format you can think of.

It will take time to replace your ebay income. You can help yourself by letting your best customers know where you have moved...you don't really even need to tell them why, just take them with you as if you were a good hairdresser moving to a new salon. It would help to list less and less as you can, because every listing you put up now is a guaranteed magnet for negative feedback, scammers, extortionists, etc.

The "win victoriously" crop of noob buyers already think they are immune from reciprocal negative feedback (and they are in some countries now, so watch out for foreign bidders). They are by and large a rude and crude bunch. They are also tight fisted. My sell through has dropped from nearly 100% to about 40% and my average sale has dropped dramatically since Christmas, with only one or two bids on most auctions, and complaints from those bidders about how high my starting price was (which is lower than it used to be, in addition to lowering my shipping prices so that my listings can still be found under Best Match).

So I am very delighted to see my lookers and my sales steadily rising on my other selling venues. I feel that my week long boycott (extended at the last minute for a second week due to limiting personal factors) has really helped me see the picture so much more clearly. My stress level is way down. Everything I have learned and experienced this past week has solidified my determination to make it work just as well for me "after ebay" as it has for the past decade there.

I am sad to see ebay change into what it is today and (worse) what it will be a year from now--a paradise for buyer fraud, with the help of PayPal. Those Siamese twins are a deadly combination. I would add this to the statement of "boycott ebay": "really really boycott PayPal"!!

If you have the ability wherever you are selling to take Google Checkout, MoneyExchange (heck, they give you $25 just to sign up and $10 for everyone you refer to them who signs up), and many other similar money transfer systems, then use them. You will have to convince your buyers to use them instead of PayPal. It's not a hard sell with MoneyExchange, but it does take a day or two for the verification process, so put a promo for them in all of your listing descriptions. Your buyers will thank you for letting them buy something from you with a $25 discount right off the top, and that will bring them back to your listings. This has been a great tool for me to build my customer base on the sites where MoneyExchange can be used. (I feel like a commercial, but the point really is, do everything you can to get free of PayPal.)

Good luck to everyone who is diversifying and working toward independence. This is the true measure of success of the boycott--empowerment versus a feeling of powerlessness, grief, and anger in the face of radical change. Accept what is happening and put your energy into moving on.

merlin_man-I signed up for ebid the other night using the link from one of your posts, then it referred me to the US page to fill out there. I hope you got your buddy point.

I haven't got started on my listings there yet, but I think I will go ahead and sign up for the lifetime seller account. It can't hurt. I haven't got the link in my siggy yet.
