PostPosted: Sat Feb 16, 2008 8:52 pm   Post subject: Warning ! Alternate Sites Spreadsheet of Information #1  Back to top

Latest version of my spreadsheet. I would be grateful if you would come back and vote if you found it useful or not after you've used it a while. Very Happy
Note: Not all the "sites" are venues - a great many are tools and resources.

Updated 2 Mar 09
145 sites added (marked A in column B)
89 sites updated (marked U in column B)
New column added - 1st column - Date entry last updated
Now opens much faster - found the problem and fixed it
Removed all commas

Updated 13 Oct 08
82 of sites added (Marked A in 1st column)
33 sites updated (Marked U in 1st column)

Updated 06 Jun 08
114 sites added
42 sites updated
Now takes a while to open - seems to be checking all the internet links, which is why I haven't updated it in a while.

Updated 31 Mar 08
Added columns AB - listed by Fetchbid as included. AC - 'rated' at Startop
Several additions and updates, as usual - did my best to mark A & U in first column.

Updated 17 Mar 08
More sites added. All niche sites visited - fees added and brief reviews. More links to reviews and threads added. eMoviePoster site corrected. Column AA noting which sites are listed on a review site I found (InternetRevenueCenter) so site can be checked for reviews (Y=I already had the site A=Added from this source.

Updated 10 Mar 08
Again in Col B, A=added since last update, U=updated. Main addition this version is ALL the sites listed in BidHopper and a few more found on BidFind (I cannot find a complete list for BidFind). Those sites on BidHopper or BidFind that I have found in other ways have had a Y added to their BidFind and/or BidHopper Column. All the rest of these added sites are in Category BidFind or BidHopper (new on both - a couple - are BidHopper for completeness). A few other sites have been added as well and some reviews and pricing information updated. I also added a Subtotal function to the Sites Heading so it says how many sites meet the filters set on the columns if you use that feature.

Updated 6 Mar 08
Added many, many sites, updated many more. Added Columns Y & Z. Added a Tab-Delimited/Separated text file in case Comma-Separated not satisfactory.

Updated 26 Feb 08
About 69 sites added, about 17 updated.
My search and columns relating to it added to the right. More search info on sheet 2 (mostly for my use, but you can look)

If you have made notes in your own copy:
Remember, you can use the first column to identify just the added and updated rows so you can update your working copy. Sort by column Updated, copy the Added rows and paste them in your copy. You can compare the updated rows and decide how to handle them. Once the old and new sheets are sorted to match row-by-row, the added columns can be copied and pasted. I didn't mark a row updated just because I added an 'included in search' tag. I tagged some more BidFind sites - I'm not sure whether or not I marked those 'U' (probably not) - you could just copy that column over.

End 26 Feb update info.

Updated 20 Feb 08

Available in:
.sxc - Open Office format - Hyperlinks are available in this format.
.xls - Excel 5.0 format as exported by Open Office - Hyperlinks work.
.csv - Comma Separated - field separators are commas , text = "
Added a Tab Delimited version to zip file - if comma separated undesirable.

New column: HV Search - Y = included in Hot & Vintages search, S = Suggested to be added. More info in this PSU topic.

If you need a program that can use spreadsheets, Go to Open Office Website. Open Office is a free 'version' of MS Office and is what I used to write this. It can import and export its own formats and MS Office formats. Recommended all over the web.

I have checked if each site exists (marked Y or N) or U if I haven't checked yet, the search functionality on most, the fees on some. It is not complete - I make notes every day. This one has 2 more columns on the left than the last one, and some inserted towards the right.

If you use the AutoFilter, that's the easiest way to find what you want - it's like a pull-down menu and automatically has everything in that column sorted in the list so you can find it. So you could set filter on Current to Y and Format to Auction - then all the visible sites would be current sites I tagged as Auction sites (most/all also have stores and/or classified). To make everything visible again, you set the blue arrowed auto filters back to the top/all. To quickly find a particular site, click on the Site Name filter arrow and choose your site from the alphabetical list - now it's the only one visible (if you don't see it pgup/pgdn).

I added column B to flag changes for those that have made notes in their own spreadsheets. I added column C when I found the Site Owners, Post your Stats!! thread. I still haven't added any Quantcast info or site stats from PSU. I have added several sites I've found mentioned, and notes on fees and internationality to some.

The columns are:
A: Date entry last updated
following columns shifted one to the right from earlier versions

B: Update: A=Added since last posted on PSU, U=Updated since post Blank=no change
C: Link to PSU: (if the owner or someone said something important about the site) - now includes some links elsewhere.
D: Current: Y=site exists N=site does not exist U=not sure if I should put Y or N or not checked
E: Recommended: MY PERSONAL feelings about the site based on various factors
F: Site Name: Also is a hyperlink to the site in .sxc or .xls format
G: Format: Auction, Classified, Stores, Trading, Search, Payment, Support, Software...
H: Velvet Skirt: my test search term - number is results returned when search appropriate
I: Relevant: were returned items relevant? Y=only velvet skirts N=random M=moderately
J: Search comments - MY comments
K: Sm/Md/Lg/Xl: MY estimation of site's relative size
L: Comments: Other comments about the site, sometimes links to info elsewhere
M: Location: What I could figure out about country presence / internationality (on some sites)
N: Fees: What I could discover about fees when I went to look (on some sites)
O: Alexa Rank: Paged thru many pages of just Shopping:Auctions - this was rank on those (Feb 0Cool
P: AuctionTamer: Y-site supported in Auction Tamer Software
Q-T: BidHopper, BidFind, GoogleBase, Froogle (aka google/shopping) I have been making Ys if I notice the site is indexed in these multi-site cross reference searches. Only a Y means anything, the lack of a Y probably just means I haven't looked yet - but you can if it matters to you.
U: HV Search - is site included in Hot & Vintage's Multi-Site Search
V,W,X,Y: AAS Search info - see above
Z: Adding notes on Auction Software used
AA: Reviewed on InternetRevenueCenter site
AB: listed by Fetchbid as included
AC: 'rated' at Startop

If you want to insert/delete/move columns, turn the AutoFilter off, then when you're done, turn it on again. You can add your own notes, your own columns, whatever will help you to keep good notes and make good decisions. Feel free to delete the Current:N sites (I sorted them to the bottom anyway. The main reason they are there is so I don't check them twice. Other folks might want those names to buy the domain LOL. You go folks!

I would be pleased as punch if any of the regular data gatherers here took this and expanded the info with what your experience tells you is important information and reposted it for others to benefit from. I, at least, find that a spreadsheet is one of the most useful ways to gather and cross reference information - especially with the Auto Filter feature!

Once again hoping this is useful to someone besides me...

You did un-Zip it of course?

Open Office can export in several formats - the one I chose was Excel 5.0 - do you have the latest & greatest? I think it needs a plug-in or something for backwards compatibility.

I can add a .csv or .sxc or .dif or .dbf or .sdc or .sdk - all formats offered by Open Office - some at different version levels. I think I'll just go ahead and add a .csv version. I am also posting the Open Office format sxc - I just found out that in the Excel version all the hyperlinks to other information are gone, and just the text tags remain.

I was about to post an update including Hot & Vintage's search engine info, and a few more sites.

Nice info, thanks. You must've spent a lot of time compiling this!

You should've used the Freeze Panes feature in Excel so the top row locks in place, which helps as we scroll down.

And FYI, Amazon auctions shut down a long time ago. As did Yahoo.

Thank you for your kind words, tym.

There are many sites in my spreadsheet that are defunct. They are there so I and others don't bother checking them again. Someone recently mentioned here that Amazon was reopening Stores of some sort, but I have not had a chance to check on that yet.

I do use freeze panes - if you d/l the Open Office version you will find the freeze and autofilters and html links all intact. Unfortunately, I cannot make these things export in an Excel format, but the people who d/l the data can easily set them for themselves, except the html links.

Try the csv file and import to Excel.

Also OpenOffice is not made by Google - sorry if I confused you - I meant 'google' as a verb as in search for.

Here is a link to their page - to the system requirements - which say it is Mac compatible (as well as Linux and Solaris) besides Windows.

http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/sys_reqs_20.html

If you're willing to try it, I recommend it, though if you already have MS Office you may not want it.

My last version of Office was 95 Wink

Ssandee,

Try Safari, and when you click on it your downloads window should open up, then you can open it from there or click show in finder so you know where the file is then start excel and open it. Worked fine for me, I'm using OS X 10.5.2, Safari, and with a G5

I still keep meaning to go put quotes from the reviews already done by PSU members, but I'm having a hard time keeping up, LOL! I just now added 2 more car type sites mentioned in another thread. And I forgot to mention that if there is a U in the Current column, I have not personally verified the site's current existence.
