EBay apps make it No. 1 mobile retailer in U.S.

Tim L. Fields bids on jewelry, art and antiques on eBay Inc., sometimes in 30 to 40 auctions at one time.

The New Orleans attorney spends hours away from his PC, so he gets his shopping done using an eBay app on his iPhone that sends alerts when he's been outbid or when a sale is about to expire. EBay's apps have allowed it to grab the lead over rival Amazon.com in a new market.

"It's sort of an addiction," says Fields, who has used the eBay mobile app to buy a $15,000 set of antique French silver.

After losing ground to Amazon.com for years in online retailing, eBay has emerged as a leader in mobile commerce. As consumers increasingly shop with their BlackBerrys, iPhones, and handsets powered by Google Inc.'s Android software, eBay has become the top mobile retailer in the United States, according to Colin Gillis, an analyst at BGC Partners LP in New York.

Thanks hotandvintage for your reply to the golfingdolphin. I couldn't have said it better. I typed out a response, but I took too long composing it and my session ran out - so I didn't get it posted.

Basically, what hasn't ebay done to destroy the auction format in the past three years? They really had the one format (successful auctions) that was doing well and maybe could have stood up against the fixed-price and buy-it now formats. But ebay management themselves declared the auction format dead back then.

I would think that bidding on an auction on a mobile device might be a good selling point for an auction site - too bad ebay has backed themselves into the BIN corner to a point that they may find it hard to get out of it now.

What a shame. Embarassed

Hi there.
Yes I'm still doing OK with a few sales on ebid,I haven't listed anything on ebay for a month or so.
But perhaps I should rephrase that in the style of one of the 'news' reports that all seem to mention ebay.

Sales roll in for internet retailer.
Kevin Bacon reports huge increase in sales on Ebid auctions for July.
"No more ebay for me" says Kevin Bacon, internet retailer and part time babe magnet,"Its ebid for me from now on"
Reporting a big increase in sales everytime Ebay brings out a new rule (which happens two ot three times a week) Mr Bacon has listed most of his enormous stock on ebid auctions. He reports that some days he achieves 100% more sales than the day before and has gone up the post office posting parcels so many times that his wife thinks he's having an affair with the counter staff."Not true" he says,"the bloke behind the counter is called Albert he's about 70 and has a moustache and he doesn't fancy me anyway".

Classic. We need to add some of these responses some place before they are lost in time. But then again out of context would they make as much sense.

Good to hear that ebid.net is working for you by the way

portocall - And yet, ebay itself has been the leading cause behind the DEMISE of the auction format for the last 3 or 4 years.

Explain your reasoning on this quote. As I see it eBay is one of the only ones that actually have a Auction Platform. I see many people touting the Alt sites and how great they are, I have not had that experience. These same Alt sites do not have real live Auctions, they are almost all 100 percent BIN.

They are pricing auctions out of their own system the start prices for auctions are going up constantly as BIN sellers pricing is going down.

They mess around with the search so much that people find their items going for nothing after it has not come up in the search, as the search is changing so much on a daily basis at times it is getting impossible to list anything that is worth anything for fear of selling it for nothing, as auction sellers have to be first in search, as they only have that one moment for a sale in many cases.
the quality of goods listed on ebay is constantly going down.

They have enforced returns on auction goods, for any reason, so the buyer just has to say they changed their mind and the return has to be accepted. Part of the fun of auctions was the risk and the thrill of the bidding system, getting caught up in it and having to have it. Wheres the fun when the buyer can say no I've changed my mind once they have messed up the auction for the seller. Buyer remorse is a monster to an ebay auction seller.

They have hidden bidders so that buyers that assumed they were being shilled before now are more definite than ever possibly damaging the whole system.

The bid used to be a contract. The bid means nothing now.

I have been watching the sellers to be most effected by the "good seller" changes, and the big BIN sellers tend to be safe from any problems, as they list in hundreds, the unique goods sellers that use auctions are limited by how many they can list, as each item has to be photographed, described with every detail and then packed when sold. So how are the unique goods sellers that use auctions as their platform going to survive under the ebay feedback kick system? At the moment they are using at least ten accounts and bidding on their own goods to give themselves glowing feedback, which is going to be drawn and quartered if the buyer takes up the trading standards offer.

Just look at the ebay regulation changes over the past few years, and ask yourself how would they benefit auction sellers. You will find almost all benefit the large BIN sellers and in a lot of case are detrimental to auction sellers.

Could probably go on all night and list them but I am not a lawyer with a mobile phone so this will have to do.

You are right about the alternatives and auctions, as I think once ebay turns them off, the auction format will be dead to the small user, as the alternatives rely on Google, and google will only show ebays auctions.

More free advertising for ebay.
So,someone with too much time on his hands spends a load of money on his mobile phone buying antiques.
So what?
Maybe he needs to get out more.

I like the funny, it had me laughing, you still making good money without the massive ebay fees on ebid.net?

I wonder if this is one of the analysts who predicted that ebay stock would be back up around 29 dollars a share by now - wrong.

I think it's ironic that ebay may be the #1 mobile retailer. And, according to the story, it's the AUCTION format on ebay that makes it so much fun on a mobile device!

And yet, ebay itself has been the leading cause behind the DEMISE of the auction format for the last 3 or 4 years.
Laughing
